A tiny early Akkadian seal (black serpentine 1.5 cm). Note the symmetric arrangement of the figures. Below see parallels in Boehmer 1965 and from the Newell collection.
Seal impressions
This seal (serpentine 2.6 cm) came from Artemission. Prof. Lambert dates it Late Akkadian 2200-2100 B.C. This group shows only 3 contestants, frequently cut in a more or less debased style. Note the two examples in Moortgat. Many of these seals -as my example- show typical Akkadian features but it is not clear if they are Akkadian or Post Akkadian or even Ur III. Moortgat dates them Late Akkadian and some to the following Ur III period, Boehmer calls them "Neo Sumerian contest seals"
This is an Akkadian seal. (Shell 3,1 cm) In the Akkadian period the first complex mythological scenes appear on cylinder seals. On this seal two gods are holding a bull in front of a winged gate. The "winged gate" group is a well known Akkadian group. See picture with a reference seal from Tell Asmar. (bottom right side) Boehmer (see bibliography) dates this group mainly to his Akkadian III period beginning with the reign of Naramsin and ending with the fall of the Akkadian empire.
