Scarabs, Scaraboids and Plaques from my collection
|
This one (steatite 1.7 cm) was found in Israel. It is from www.zzantiquities.com It depicts the birth name of Merenptah, son and successor of Ramses II: "Mer En Ptah, Hetep Her Maat". He carried out a campaign against Canaan. The Merenptah hymn on the famous Israel-Stela says: "Israel has been wiped out...its seed is no more." The fact that this scarab was found in Israel (Samaria) makes it especially interesting. See picture with parallel in Petrie 1917. References: Petrie 1917, Pl. XLIV, 4 -8.

This scarab (steatite 1,6 cm) depicts the names of two kings, on the right side a royal cartouche with the throne name of Thutmosis III: "Men Kheper Re". On the left side it depicts the inscription: "Hetep Her Maat". This name was the second birth name of king Merenptah, the eldest son of Ramses II. Petrie attributes this scarab to king Merenptah. As his grandfather Sethos I he wanted to equate himself with Thutmosis III on this scarab. Pleases see picture with a reference scarab in Petrie 1917 (bottom, right side). References: Petrie 1917, Pl. XLIV, 19.4, 9-13

A tiny scarab (steatite 1.2 cm) from Israel. It looks like a crude Amun-Re inscription. BUT: Another very interesting reading came from Phil Stewart: "I'm thinking it might be the prenomen of Seti I (Men Maat Re). You've got Re up at the top, moved to the front of the name, and then mn, then below right a mAat feather. Then there's what could be "Lord of the Two Lands", nb tawy...neb basket, dual marker, two horizontal "land" signs." Maybe we have a double meaning here ?
